Worldwide Car Donations (888) 362-8844 - car donation frequently asked questions

Does it cost me anything to donate a car?

No. Towing is free, the paperwork is free, and if a duplicate title is needed we pay for that too. There is no point in the process where you are asked for money.

How much can I deduct?

It depends on what happens to the vehicle. If it sells for more than $500 you deduct the actual sale price. If it sells for $500 or less you can claim fair market value up to $500. If we keep and use the vehicle in our programs, fair market value rules apply. We tell you which is likely before we accept it.

Do you only give $500 receipts?

No, and this is what makes us better! Under $500 needs no extra paperwork, which is why it is the default everywhere else. We inspect first. Cars that still run often go to a registered dealer or auction where they bring considerably more, and the sale documentation supports the higher figure on your 1098-C.

Do you take cars that do not run?

Yes. Most of what we accept does not run. Dead batteries, blown engines, failed inspections, cars that have not moved in years. Our trucks are equipped for it.

Do you take flood or accident damaged vehicles?

Yes. Both cities produce plenty of them. Storm water through the electrics or a total loss after a collision does not change what the vehicle is worth in parts and metal.

What if I cannot find the title?

In most cases we apply for the duplicate and pay the fee. Bring your identification and the registration if you have it. Call us with the details and we will tell you right away whether it is workable.

How fast is the pickup?

Usually same day or next morning, and we work evenings, weekends and holidays. You choose the time that is best for you.

Do I need to be there?

Someone with authority to sign needs to be present with identification, since documents are signed at collection. If that is a problem, call us and we will work out an alternative.

What do I do with my plates?

They come off before the vehicle is towed, in both states. In Florida surrender them to your county tax collector. In New York surrender them at a DMV office and keep the FS-6T receipt. Do not cancel your insurance until that is done.

When can I cancel my insurance?

After the vehicle is gone and after the plates are surrendered, never before. In New York a lapse while the registration is still active can lead to a licence suspension.

Can I donate more than one vehicle?

Yes. Estates, body shop lots and households clearing several vehicles at once are all routine. Tell us how many and where.

Do you take motorcycles, boats or trailers?

Case by case. Call and describe it and we will give you an honest answer on the spot.

Is the charity a real 501(c)(3)?

Yes. Worldwide Donations is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and Worldwide Car Donations is its vehicle donation program. You can verify any charity through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.

When do I get my tax receipt?

An initial receipt at pickup, and Form 1098-C once the vehicle is sold or its use is determined. For deductions over $500 that form is what supports your claim.

Does a December donation count for that year?

Yes. The contribution date is the date the charity receives the donation, so a vehicle donated on December 31st counts for that tax year even though the sale happens later.

Where do you accept vehicles from?

All five boroughs of New York City, Nassau County, NY. Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County in South Florida.
