New York titles are signed on the back, in section one, transfer by owner, on the seller signature line. Print and sign exactly as your name appears on the front of the title. Sign only in the seller section and never in the buyer section.
We remove the plates and the registration sticker
In New York the plates belong to you, not the vehicle. We remove them and peel the registration sticker off the windshield before the vehicle is towed. If you let a car leave with your plates on it, you are still the one the DMV holds responsible for it, including tolls, E-ZPass violations and parking tickets.
Surrender the plates and keep the FS-6T
Either transfer the plates to another vehicle you own or surrender them at a DMV office. When you surrender them you receive an FS-6T receipt. Keep it. In New York, surrendering the plates is what releases your liability, and the FS-6T is your proof it happened.
Do not cancel your insurance first
This is the one that catches people. New York requires continuous insurance on any registered vehicle. If there is even a one day gap between the registration being active and the insurance being cancelled, the DMV can suspend your driver’s license. Surrender the plates first, get the FS-6T, then call your insurer.
No title, or an inherited vehicle
A duplicate New York title runs about thirty dollars through the DMV and takes roughly two weeks, or around a hundred through a DMV service agent if you need it faster. We apply for it and we pay for it. For a vehicle left by someone who has died, New York has affidavit procedures based on the value of the vehicle, and you will need the death certificate. Call us and we will tell you which route applies.
