Ready meals, groceries, blankets and socks. Clean clothing, wipes, a hat in winter and cold water in summer. Dog food, because somebody sleeping outside with a dog feeds the dog first. Summer on the pavement in New York City is as brutal as it is in South Florida, and New York adds a winter on top of it. The need does not stop with the season.
Rides to the doctor when nobody else will take you
Medicaid covers some non-emergency medical transport. Medicare mostly does not, and plans that offer it often cap it or run it out. So an older person with a Tuesday cardiology appointment and no family nearby has nowhere to turn. Volunteers drive them, free. That is one of the reasons a running van donated to us may be kept rather than sold.
Visits, and the phone call program
Elder care is more complicated than a meal delivery. People go weeks without a conversation. Visits and regular check in calls cost almost nothing to run and matter more than most funders realize.
Funded by vehicles, not by government money
There is no state or federal funding behind any of this. It runs on donated vehicles. This is part of our mission, and it is why every car donated to us matters so much.
